AFAIK, they're isolated areas for collisions to happen. This way, the amount of collision checks are greatly reduced to a body's current island, rather than checking the whole world.

Do Collision islands allow you to make hierachies of objects? For instance particle emitters with a collision frame attatched to another physics body? Cause I would also like to know how Newton deals with Object Hierachies, or perhaps an approach to it.

I use irrlicht and its rendering systemhas a parent 2 child hierachy. Newton does seem to have an obvious way of doing this.

No, there's no such thing in physics. Everything is in world space, if you want attachments, etc., you'll want to use joints.
